Let’s take a few moments and define self-confidence. First, while self-confidence is essentially the same between everyday life and sport life, there are some differences. Someone can have confidence in sport but not in everyday situations or vice versa. Self-confidence is defined as the strong relationships between a person’s thoughts, feelings, and behavior which if motivated correctly can help an individual excel with confidence in anything they try to do. For an athlete, this is referring directly to one’s performance. Self-confidence matched with physical ability can have some powerful effects. To get the most out of confidence and performance let’s review what components are involved in self confidence.

  • Preparation – how an athlete prepares themselves until it comes time for them to actually compete.
  • Trust – in one’s ability, training, and preparation
  • Knowledge of limitations
  • Coach’s/Outside input
  • Ability to adjust – how well an athlete learns from mistakes and failures
  • Understanding of what helped them succeed in winning situation

Take the time to build your confidence, it will help your performance in many ways.
